Deskjet can print, copy and scan, in addition to the USB connection everywhere support HP ePrint, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct. That last option means you can print wirelessly from devices including smartphones and tablets even if you do not have a wireless router. One thing you do not get very much ink: the 3630 ships with starter cartridges, so you have to replace them after about 100 pages.
The lack of a touch screen means you have to configure Wi-Fi via HP's own application (on the disc provided or free of 123.hp.com), which is quite simple: it's just a matter of said application must use network printer. This application is available for Mac and Windows, and download the necessary drivers and software utilities once the connection has been established.
There is a 60-sheet input tray and 25-sheet output tray with support for plain paper (up to 90gsm), cards HP and HP photo paper (300gsm); if you are printing on photo paper prints borderless, and A4 3mm margin is small. print quality up to 1200 x 1200, 4800 x 1200 effectively if you are printing on certain HP photo paper and your source 1200dpi. 1200dpi scanner, and copier delivers 600 x 300 dpi.
As you would expect from a low cost Deskjet printer inkjet is not the fastest around. Official ISO speed 8.5ppm in black and 6ppm, although the draft mode speeds things up to 20ppm for black. You can expect the first page in about 14 seconds. No Quiet Mode makes the printer slower and a little more quiet, but we did not find the normal mode to be very noisy.
The HP Deskjet 3630 took 302 HP 302 black and tri-color cartridge, which costs £ 11.99 and £ 13.99 respectively. Black cartridges provide 190 pages and 165 color, so you pay 8.5p 6.3p per page for black and per page for color. Like the other tri-color cartridge you need to replace the entire cartridge when one color runs out.
Cost runs pretty awful with standard cartridges, but the printer also supports HP XL cartridges, which is £ 19.99 to £ 22.00 for black and color. XL cartridges provide 480 pages black and 330 color, which works as 4.2p per page and 6.7p respectively. It was still quite expensive for black but it was not bad for color.
There are other options, and it's called Instant Ink. HP Instant Ink is a subscription service based on usage, and costs £ 1.99 per month up to 50 pages, £ 3.49 for 100 pages and £ 7.99 for 300 pages. HP reckons that it will save between £ 78 and £ 516 per year on ink costs compared to standard cartridges bought as and when you need them.
